We are aware that the physical distance between the mouth and the ear is bound not to be changed. Indeed, there is a reason behind. A mouth which speaks whatever comes to devaluates the word and damages the ear. An ear which listens to anything spoken to it is confined to fall down together with the word.
Though in today’s theatre, there has been no quantitative change in the distance between the audience and the actors, there is obviously a qualitative loss of distance. We have reached this conclusion through observing how the actors today cannot make clear the distance they keep between themselves and the theatre. Actors, with their deeds onstage, entertained either themselves or the audience. Entertaining the audience made them popular yet casual and ordinary; they made money though. Entertaining themselves on the other hand, got them trapped by their arrogance and made them lonely. Lack of distance or distancelessness; as we name, this is.
We consider this loss of distance as a problem of the age. For nothing is in its proper place and the distance between everything and anything has already faded. Reminding the grasshoppers spreading over the wheats; contamination has penetrated into anything around. We wonder, whether it is possible to stay out of it? Tarnishing is collectiveness and not nice. Children can be tolerated for not keeping the distance between them and the things, as reasonable this is enough. A child is not aware where to stand. However, those who put themselves forward and breaking everything down with the caprice of a child and use such words to legitimize this as art, love and etc. is not nice at all.
We hope that when we could reach a qualified distance with the words, we may be freed of being a mouth that speaks all and an ear that listens to all. When we talk of certainty, we mean not a quantitative distance but simplicity. Human can grow mature in whatever circumstances they are by holding onto what they do.
Theatre is the light under which we long for growing up.
